Renovation Goals
The goal was to modernize a closed-off and outdated layout while creating a space that felt open, functional, and tailored to the homeowners’ personality.
- Open the main floor by removing walls and the existing office
- Expand the kitchen footprint for better functionality
- Improve natural light and connection to the backyard
- Incorporate custom features that reflect the homeowners’ lifestyle
- Upgrade finishes, lighting, and overall design cohesion
Transforming a confined layout into an open, highly functional kitchen without expanding the home’s footprint required precise planning, structural coordination, and creative design solutions.
Vision
Bold, Personality-Driven Kitchen Designed for Modern Living
The vision was to create a striking, contemporary space that balances clean design with warmth and individuality.
- Rich navy cabinetry for a dramatic, custom aesthetic
- Soft neutral tones to balance and brighten the space
- Organic wood accents to introduce warmth and texture
- Seamless indoor-outdoor connection for entertaining
- Clean lines softened with curved design elements
The result was a cohesive, modern kitchen that blends bold design with everyday functionality while reflecting the homeowners’ unique style.
Design Phase
Creating Clarity Before Construction
The design focused on reworking the layout to maximize space, improve flow, and integrate custom features seamlessly into the architecture.
- Removal of pony wall and office to open the main floor
- Large peninsula replacing traditional island for improved circulation
- Integration of a curved countertop edge to soften the layout
- Full-height cabinetry for increased storage and visual impact
- Dedicated desk zone built into underutilized wall space
- Strategic appliance placement for better workflow
BEFORE & AFTER FLOOR PLANS
The transformation centred on opening the layout and repositioning key living zones to improve flow and usability.
Old Floor Plan
The original layout featured a closed-off kitchen separated by a pony wall and adjacent office space. This limited both natural light and circulation, creating a disconnected feel between the kitchen, dining, and living areas. Storage and workspace were also constrained, with inefficient appliance placement and minimal usable prep space.
New Floor Plan
The redesigned layout removes barriers to create a fully open main floor anchored by a large, functional kitchen. The kitchen now occupies a central position, with a generous peninsula, improved work zones, and direct connection to the dining and living areas. The addition of a large sliding patio door enhances natural light and creates a strong indoor-outdoor relationship.
3D RENDERINGS
The 3D renderings played a key role in helping the homeowners visualize the transformation before construction began. They clearly illustrated the new layout, material palette, and custom features—ensuring alignment on design decisions and giving the clients confidence in the final outcome.
Construction Phase
Bringing the Design to Life
Construction required careful coordination due to structural considerations, an occupied home, and the integration of multiple custom elements.
- Structural wall removals to open the main floor layout
- Installation of a new 4-panel sliding patio door
- Custom millwork including desk, shelving, and cabinetry
- Bulkhead construction to align cabinetry with vaulted ceiling
- Full kitchen rebuild with updated plumbing and electrical
- Installation of LVP flooring throughout the main level
- Integrated lighting including pot lights, undercabinet, and feature lighting
Despite structural challenges and working within an occupied home, the project was executed with precision – delivering a highly functional, visually striking kitchen that seamlessly integrates design, craftsmanship, and everyday usability.
